MURRAY – One of the most widely read children’s book series of the last 20 years comes to the Playhouse in the Park stage this weekend with “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical.”

“Middle school, ugh. It’s the worst,” reads the synopsis on Playhouse’s website. “But Greg is determined not to be at the bottom of the popularity chart. He’ll leave that to his weird neighbor, Fregley. Or maybe Greg’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson. But it’s not going to be Greg … no way.”

The show is based on author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney’s first “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” illustrated novel, which was published in 2007 after having previously gained popularity in online installments.
