MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich. — Chippewa Hills High School (CHHS) in Mecosta County has been put under lockdown while officials investigate a verbal report of a possible student with a gun.

According to the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), around 9:50 a.m. on Thursday, deputies were dispatched to the school.

MCSO, the Big Rapids Police Department and the Michigan State Police (MSP) responded to CHHS.

Deputies said MCSO is in the early stages of its investigation, but it's believed that a student overheard another student mention a gun and reported it.

The school was placed under lockdown for precautionary reasons.

A search of the school is being conducted by an MSP K-9 and interviews are being held.

MCSO said at this time, there's no indication that a student actually had a firearm
