KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect making headlines across the country, has been spotted in Knox County, according to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

The invasive insects attack several types of plants, like fruit trees, hardwoods and even grapevines. On top of that, the fly is known to deposit egg masses on pretty much anything solid, like cars, firewood, outdoor furniture and toys.

The confirmation stemmed from a citizen report, the department said.

“Citizen reports are essential in stopping the spread of this destructive pest,” Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M., said. “This non-native insect threatens the health and viability of several agricultural businesses in our state. We want your help in watching out for this pest and reporting and
