Plans to improve the streetscape of an Applecross retail centre have been abandoned after businesses objected to losing parking spaces.

The City of Melville had planned a $9.1 million upgrade of Kearns Crescent in the Riseley activity centre.

But the council unanimously voted at its August meeting to limit its work in the area to resurfacing the road in the 2026-27 financial year.

Kearns Crescent is the major commercial activity area in the Riseley activity centre and considered a key commercial precinct in the city’s local planning scheme.

The city has been speaking to businesses for about a decade about upgrading its streetscape.

“Accessibility for pedestrians and businesses along the outer ring of Kearns Crescent is poor and poses access and safety risks,” a council report said.
