In August of 2022, information resources staff at the University of Michigan announced their intention to unionize under the banner of University Staff United . Three years later, USU’s membership base has significantly expanded and the union is now negotiating its first contract with the University.

USU is currently negotiating on behalf of U-M employees in Student and Instructional Services, their first and only recognized bargaining unit. This unit includes admissions, registrar and financial aid counselors, student service employees in various academic departments and U-M child care workers, among others.
