Tasmanian MP George Razay has ended his maiden speech in parliament by singing the Lord’s Prayer in ancient Aramaic.

The Independent member for Bass stunned colleagues last week after delivering his few words in one of the world’s oldest languages, still preserved by his Syriac Orthodox faith.

Dr Razay, a former Launceston General Hospital geriatric specialist, city councillor, and university professor, drew on his personal journey from rural Syria to Tasmania, making it to State Parliament.

During his speech, he credited faith, family, and love as the guiding forces that shaped his life and carried him through hardship.

The Syrian-born MP told parliament that despite facing many obstacles, he had always remained committed to positivity and resilience.
