MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man riding a bicycle in Merced County was killed after a head-on hit-and-run crash early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says at around 6:20 a.m., officers responded to an unresponsive man who was found on Santa Fe Drive west of Shaffer Road, outside the city of Winton.

Investigators say the unidentified man, who was around 40 or 50 years old, was riding his bicycle westbound in the eastbound lane of Santa Fe Drive, west of Shaffer Road. At the same time, a vehicle was travelling eastbound on Santa Fe Drive, west of Shaffer Road.

According to the CHP, the driver of the vehicle crashed head-on into the front wheel of the bicycle. The driver did not stop and continued driving eastbound toward Shaffer Road. The bicyclist
