A former Porterville Police Chief who had a distinguished law enforcement career has died. The Porterville Police Department announced on Wednesday that John C. Smith passed away.

Smith served as Porterville's police chief from 1977-1984. “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John C. Smith, who faithfully served as Chief of Police for the Porterville Police Department,” PPD stated. “Chief Smith dedicated his career to the safety and well-being of our community, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and service.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him. His contributions to the Porterville Police Department and the City of Porterville will not be forgotten.”

Smith was from Del City, Okla., and attended
