ZOAR ‒ The National Trust for Historic Preservation has honored the Zoar village levee project with its "Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation" award.
The $14 million project, completed in 2023, repaired a 1930s-era levee that the U.S Army Corps of Engineers had constructed to protect the small Tuscarawas County community, which is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Throughout the project, the Army Corps of Engineers truly understood the historic value of Zoar Village, emphasized public communication, and maintained visitor access to the historic buildings," Travis Voyles, acting chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, said in a prepared statement.
