WASHINGTON — Anacostia native Zackary Battle was driving down Jasper Street Southeast to visit a friend on Friday morning when he thought he saw smoke coming out of a building.

"Something wouldn’t let me drive past," he admitted.

So Battle decided to get out of his car.

"I seen the windows, they were shattering out this way. It was flames coming out," he said as he pointed towards the building.

Once he got inside the apartment building, he ran upstairs to the third floor of the Knox Hill Senior Apartments where he heard a man's frantic voice.

"I need help, I need help! My wife! My wife is stuck, I need to get my wife out," he yelled.

Battle and that man put the bedridden woman into a wheelchair and started to push her down the hallway to the stairwell.

"It was smoke everywhere," he
