Chris Davis, the owner of Pita Wheel in Gastonia, is opening a new restaurant in the city’s downtown.

The space that was formerly Freeman’s Pub , 173 W. Main Ave. in Gastonia, will soon become Tavern 1899, a bar and grill, which plans to offer Italian food, according to a presentation given by Gastonia Economic Development Specialist Amber Bridges at a Sept. 2 meeting.

According to research by the building and business owners, the building was constructed in 1899, which played a part in the name choice, Bridges said.

Davis is looking to add new signage, repaint and add different lighting. Work has already started on the interior of the building, and renovations are only expected to take a couple of months, she said.
