WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- An investigation is underway after an attempted robbery led to an exchange of gunfire in the Capitol Hill area Saturday night, leaving two people injured, D.C. police said.

Police first received word of the shooting in the area of 8th Street and Constitution Avenue, Northeast at around 10:15 p.m. At the scene, officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Medics took the man, who was conscious and breathing, to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers found another person nearby also suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. That person, who police described only as a "male suspect," was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
