TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Many residents gathered at the Florida Capitol at 2 p.m. Saturday to protest against immigration detention centers in Florida.

This comes after Governor DeSantis said they are planning to open the “Panhandle Pokey” as a way to reduce travel time for detainees in the Panhandle.

The group behind the protest, the Tallahassee Immigration Rights Alliance, said they are standing in solidarity with their immigrant neighbors.

Some signs held by protestors read “Protect due process”, while others said “Free speech for thee but not for me” and “Free Palestine.”

The group said the rally concluded with a moment of silence in honor of Trey Reed , which was led by Florida A&M University students.
