The city of Opelika has removed signs that recognize it as the hometown of former Miss America Mallory Hagan after comments Hagan made about slain political activist Charlie Kirk.
“We (have) been in the process of a city-wide signage project throughout Opelika in an effort to update and standardize signage across the community,” Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said in a statement.
“While everyone has the right to free speech, it’s also important to recognize that speech can carry consequences, which is why I asked our city crews to remove the pageant signs late last week.
“As we move forward, we will be looking at new ways to honor individuals, particularly our veterans, who have sacrificed so much. Residents will see more signage changes in the coming months as this citywide project continue
