One of Canberra's most significant heritage buildings is undergoing a series of remediation works after a "flooding event" caused by severe weather more than 18 months ago.

More than $11 million is being spent to fix parts of the heritage-listed John Gorton Building in Parkes, which was lashed with significant rain and flash flooding on January 13, 2024.

At the time, the Bureau of Meteorology issued warnings of "life-threatening flash flooding" and "giant hail" in the ACT.

The John Gorton Building is occupied by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, but is managed by the Department of Finance.
