CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The College of Charleston will host its third community meeting Monday on the Coming Street Commons project.
The college is hoping to construct a new dormitory that would house 1,200 students; however, the plan has been controversial as the project involves the demolition of the historic former YWCA building, a site of significance for the Civil Rights movement.
Leaders say the building also sits on top of a potter’s field, where many enslaved Africans and indigenous people are believed to have been buried.
The College will provide updates on the project during Monday night’s meeting, and community members will be able to hear directly from representatives from various elements of the project.
That meeting will be held at the St. Julian Devine Community Center
