A 13-year-old boy has been taken into custody after an unloaded gun was found in a student’s backpack at Ferndale Middle School, according to a release from the High Point Police Department.

On Sept. 22, at around 8:20 a.m., staff at Ferndale Middle School notified law enforcement about an unloaded 9-mm handgun found in a student’s backpack.

According to the release, a weapons detection scanner alerted staff to the backpack. School staff quickly secured the student and the gun.

Authorities say the student never displayed the weapon and did not make any verbal threats.

Officers have filed a juvenile petition for felony possession of a stolen firearm, felony possession of a firearm on educational property, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.
