A 54-year-old Hamilton couldn’t escape a police dog and was arrested in connection with a home invasion in Waterloo.

Waterloo Regional Police said on Sunday, at approximately 2:05 a.m., officers responded to the area of Stillmeadow Circle and Beechlawn Drive after three masked men had gained entry into a home and assaulted the homeowner with a hammer and bear spray.

The men then fled the area.

During the search for suspects, a police service dog located one of the suspects and officers arrested him.

He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The man was charged with robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, break and enter, and assault with a weapon.

He was held for a bail hearing.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
