A Kitchener man charged with murdering his intimate partner and trying to kill his mother and a girl pleaded not guilty to all charges Monday.

Dylon Moreira, 33, is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

The Crown alleges he stabbed the three people in a house on Cayley Court in Kitchener in November 2022.

In an opening statement at the judge-alone trial, Crown prosecutor Jonathan Janke said police found Moreira and the body of his intimate partner, 41-year-old Vanessa Legate, in the basement.

Moreira’s mother, Diana Moreira, 51, and a girl, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, managed to escape, Janke said.

A knife with a 3.5-inch blade was found in the house, court was told.
