An impressive storm system descended onto Waterloo Region Sunday night, knocking down trees, starting fires and leaving thousands without power.

The shelf cloud moved in over the region at around 7:20 p.m. last night, dumping an estimated 39 mm of rain.

Weatherstats.ca , a website that tracks weather in Canada, reported that Sunday’s storm brought the most precipitation the region has seen in at least five months.

Kelly McMath, spokesperson for Enova Power, said more than 2,000 people in the Vanier neighbourhood near Fairview Park Mall were left without power due to the storm.
