CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man was convicted and sentenced to eight to 10 years in prison for trafficking fentanyl and resisting a public officer.

29-year-old Daniel Austin Rhoney, from Vale , was the passenger in a car during a traffic stop when deputies arrested him. Rhoney was not wearing a seat belt, seemed "fidgety" and gave a fake name when asked, Catawba County Sheriff's Office said.

When a deputy tried to detain him, Rhoney ran away. Deputies chased after him and struggled to subdue him.

Multiple small bags of fentanyl were found in the car, which Rhoney said belonged to him.

Rhoney pleaded guilty and must pay an additional fine of $750,000.
