CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) riders are seeing increased police presence across the network as security officers gain expanded enforcement powers, though passengers remain divided on whether the changes are making a meaningful difference in safety.

Professional Police Services, which provides security for CATS, now has the authority to enforce laws beyond buses, light rail, and stations. The expanded jurisdiction covers the rail trail, East Trade Street, and areas surrounding transit centers.

"I was not seeing any cops or anything else, now it's much better," one rider said.

Another passenger noted the visible changes: "I see more people in yellow vests, security people, and bike officers they do patrol the areas a little more."
