More than 30 South Australian greyhound trainers have threatened to boycott races unless two former welfare staff are returned to their jobs and an official stood down.

The group issued an ultimatum to Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA), which could leave the organisation financially liable to betting companies if not enough races are filled.

In an email from September 8, obtained by the ABC, trainers wrote they were "left with no alternative but to signal our intention for potential strike action" after the departures of animal re-homing workers Jemma Nicholson and Tara Ramsey.

The letter does not clarify the reason behind their exit, but claims they were subject to "unjust and inappropriate treatment".
