After an early summer of increased rain, town leaders and residents say Toms Brook is facing worsening flood risks fueled by blocked culverts, collapsing drainage infrastructure and growing runoff from surrounding development.

Mayor Lisa Currie warned that the town is inching closer to what she called a “50-year flood,” recalling a storm in the early 1970s that killed a woman and infant.

“When it rains hard, the water moves through town like a river,” Currie said in August. “I’ve lived here 35 years and have never seen it like that. Our 50-year flood is coming, and people need to be prepared.”
