TEMPLE, Texas — A city block has been evacuated in Temple as a result of a gas leak, according to the City of Temple.

According to the City, Temple Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a gas leak around 3:34 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22. The City stated neighbors in the area said they heard a loud pop and soon afterwards noticed a "light odor of natural gas" in the area.

When firefighters arrived, they reportedly found that maintenance crews had struck a gas line while working in the area.

As a precaution, Temple Fire evacuated the full city block between 1st Street and 3rd Street, with the cross streets of Young Avenue and Zenith Avenue, according to the City.

Roads are reportedly blocked, and residents are being asked to avoid the area at this time.
