New Mexico is hosting a state free fishing weekend to allow for free public water fishing in late September.

Anyone is allowed to fish for free in permitted public fishing waters on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28.

Those anglers must comply with other rules and regulations associated with fishing in New Mexico.

State Department of Game and Fish Secretary Mike Sloane said the weekend festivities are an opportunity for families to create lasting memories.

"This is a great time to take your family fishing and teach them a skill that will provide a lifetime of enjoyment," Sloane said.
