New Mexico is seeing a "drastic reduction" in greenhouse gases compared to Texas after adopting rules to tackle methane and ozone emissions from the oil and gas sector, the governor announced Monday.

New satellite data shows the state's methane rules have cut oil and gas facility emissions in the Permian Basin by half compared to the Lone Star state — even as production in New Mexico increased by 100% since 2020, while Texas' industry saw only a 20% rise in that time, the Governor's Office said in a news release.

The data from advanced satellite technology was provided by MethaneSAT, a subsidiary of the Environmental Defense Fund, supported by the Bezos Earth Fund, according to the release.
