VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — If you’re headed to the Neptune Festival this weekend, you might be surprised to find lifeguards still in the stands.
Fall may be in the air but for the first time ever, lifeguards were in the stands on the Oceanfront this past weekend, and they will be this weekend, also.
Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service Chief Tom Gill explained they are normally only in stands until the weekend after Labor Day.
"In our 95-year history, we have never had guards on stands this late this season," Gill said. “We want to be able to be out there and protect [people], and give places for people to go where they feel comfortable, feel safe by being right in front of those lifeguard stands [that are] staffed, as opposed to people just patrolling along and hoping if somebody gets i
