(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’
On this date in 1806, American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark returned to Missouri from the first recorded overland journey from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast and back.
They left for their expedition two years before their return to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase.
On the other side of the continental divide, they were met by Sacagawea’s tribe, who sold them horses for their journey down through the Bitterroot Mountains.
