A tornado that turned into a waterspout was reported Monday evening over Torch Lake in northern Lower Michigan, the National Weather Service reported.
The funnel over Torch Lake in Antrim County "transitioned" into a tornadic waterspout, which the weather service describes as "similar to tornadoes over water." The sighting was listed on the weather service's Storm Reports website page.
"Tornadic waterspouts are simply tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water," according to https://www.weather.gov/mfl/waterspouts . They are associated with severe thunderstorms "and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning."
