While thousands of yellow rubber ducks raced down the Dan River on Saturday morning, others were more relaxed, soaking up the sun over at Ballou Park in Danville.

These were also more colorful.

Some were blue. Some green. Some orange.

A few had hats. One even donned a helmet.

As it just so happened, Danville Sheriff Mike Mondul was “ducked” Saturday morning.

In a first for Danville, some 54 Jeep enthusiasts rode into Ballou Park for the Riverview Rotary Club’s Jeep Jam, which coincided with the Ducks on the Dan.

The waterfowl connected them both.

In what’s become a new tradition, Jeep owners collect the colorful little ducks and oftentimes line them up along the dashboard. It’s also common for Jeep owners to leave a duck for another, something called “ducking.”
