Canada’s gun buyback is moving ahead, with a pilot program beginning in Cape Breton.
Unveiled Tuesday by Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, the government firearms confiscation program kicked off in the Nova Scotia community and will soon expand across Canada.
The small-scale Cape Breton pilot will go on for six weeks in order to test the program, with a target to collection 200 so-called “assault-style” firearms.
Participation in this pilot, the government insists, will be “voluntary.”
A web portal and dedicated call centre will be established to provide assistance.
After the pilot concludes, firearm owners across the country will be provided information on steps needed to declare prohibited firearms.
