A Toledo man who drove the getaway car for the robbery of a letter carrier received a 20-month prison sentence from a federal judge Tuesday morning.

Kathleen Tharp, the defense lawyer for Damere Wilson, 21, urged U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary to consider probation on the grounds of her client’s crime-free past, his steady employment, and the impact a prison term would have on his infant son, girlfriend, and mother.

But while Judge Zouhary gave Wilson a lighter sentence than suggested in federal guidelines, “I can’t in good conscience go that far in this case” as to sparing him incarceration altogether.

The 20 months for the top count, robbery of mail or other government property, includes concurrent time for Wilson’s lesser indicted charges of theft of postal keys and theft of mail.
