OWENSBORO, Ky.(WEVV) — The Green River District Health Department has advised residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites as West Nile Virus (WNV) cases rise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported six cases in Kentucky this year, with three in the Green River District.

Since 2003, 12 WNV cases have been confirmed in the district. Kentucky typically sees about 12 cases annually, with a peak of 23 cases in 2012.

West Nile Virus spreads through mosquito bites, with most cases occurring in summer and fall. Symptoms range from mild to severe, particularly affecting those over 50 or with underlying conditions.

Residents are urged to eliminate standing water, use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long clothing outdoors, and limit outdoor activities at dusk
