HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A bridge in Holyoke is closed after state crews found a hole in a girder.
Holyoke DPW said that a MassDOT inspection team found a hole measuring 20-inches high and 12-inches wide in a girder on the Appleton Street bridge that crosses the first level canal. As a result of what Holyoke DPW described as visible “widespread deterioration” of the girders that are not encased in gunite, the bridge has been closed to all traffic.
City officials have met and appropriate agencies are aware of the closure and have made changes in their emergency response routes. Work continues on final detour routes for drivers and Holyoke DPW indicated those will be released once they become available.
