HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Officials announced that the bridge carrying Appleton Street/Route 141 over the first-level canal in Holyoke will be closed until further notice.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation stated that during a scheduled inspection on Tuesday, crews discovered deterioration on multiple beams. According to the Holyoke Department of Public Works, the inspection team found a hole that was 20 inches tall and 12 inches wide, causing widespread damage and resulting in the bridge's closure.

Holyoke officials are working on detour routes, which will be shared with the public once they are finalized. Temporary detour signage has been posted in the area for traffic to follow during this time. Drivers should expect delays and use caution.
