KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knoxville Police Department announced Tuesday that a horse used by its recently formed mounted patrol unit has been retired due to a medical condition. It will be replaced at no cost to the department.

The horse, dubbed "Waggoner" after longtime KPD officer Mike Waggoner, was recently diagnosed with a genetic muscular disorder that can limit its ability to perform strenuous activity. He has since been transferred to Faith N Friends Horse Rescue & Sanctuary in Corryton, which provides horse-based therapy and educational opportunities.

Waggoner was purchased in late 2024 using federal grant funding. Mounted Patrol International LLC is sending another horse to take its place at no additional cost. The replacement horse is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
