According to the City of Fort Worth, cast iron pipes are to blame for at least 85% of water main breaks, despite only making up a fraction of the city's entire pipe system.

That's why they're trying to replace all 730 miles of cast iron pipe with newer materials.

Mary Gugliuzza, spokesperson for the city's water department, said they had been working on a plan since the February 2021 winter storm, which caused over 700 breaks "almost exclusively" to cast iron pipe.

She said a main break in August 2023 pumped up the program and "really raised the profile of the risk and the consequence of failure."
