SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A longstanding surfing contest will take place at La Jolla Shores in October and the deadline to participate is just around the corner.

Young, up-and-coming surfers will gather at La Jolla Shores for the Menehune Junior Surf Contest, presented by the Windansea Surf Club, on Saturday, Oct. 4.

The first Menehune contest was held at La Jolla Shores in 1965. Since then, it has attracted fans 12 years old and under to participate and compete in the sport of surfing.

According to the Windansea Surf Club's website, the purpose of the contest as stated in 1965 by Steve Jenner, then-president of the junior division, is to "celebrate the young who will eventually take power from the old."
