Those considering a run for Norfolk councillor in the next municipal election have a new incentive – a 44.5 per cent pay increase.

At a meeting on Tuesday, councillors approved, in a 5-4 vote, bumping the salaries of the next Norfolk County mayor and councillors based on a ratio of what is paid to a Member of Provincial Parliament.

It was agreed that the mayor’s remuneration be set at 75 per cent of an MPP’s salary, which increases the mayor’s salary from the current $93,139 to $118,013.

Pay for councillors will be 50 per cent of that earned by the mayor, bumping their annual salary from the current $40,830 to $59,006.

Councillors locked in the close vote spoke passionately on both sides of the debate.
