They’re used to safeguarding the halls of Pennsylvania government.

But a detail of Capitol Police is being tasked with keeping watch over the former Tent City homeless encampment off South Front Street, now that the PennDOT-owned site has been cleared of Harrisburg’s unhoused.

“Capitol Police will maintain a presence during this transition to ensure safety as PennDOT proceeds with site cleanup and preparation work,” Pennsylvania Department of General Services communications director L. Paul Vezzetti said in a written statement Tuesday afternoon.

More than a dozen Capitol Police officers were at the encampment site early Tuesday morning . The officers fanned out through the tent-dotted, trash-strewn woods south of Shipoke.
