HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Zoo has a new primate.
The zoo welcomed Bono, a 42-year-old male white-handed gibbon, from the Santa Barbara Zoo.
They brought in Bono to provide companionship for Japan, a 48-year-old female gibbon and longtime resident of the zoo.
Both gibbons outlived their previous mates and are now considered seniors, giving these two another chance at love in their golden years.
This species is known to be monogamous in the wild, forming lifelong bonds with their mates.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Bono to our zoo ohana,” said Honolulu Zoo Director Linda Santos. “He’s adjusted well to our climate and to his new companion. It’s heartwarming to see this special pairing unfold as they enter their golden years.”
