MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Despite public comment against the National Guard coming to Memphis, a resolution asking the governor to stop it failed to pass in the city council Tuesday night.
Around two dozen people spoke in favor of the resolution, which urged Governor Bill Lee to reject President Donald Trump’s proposal to send National Guard troops into Memphis and authorized the council attorney to take any necessary legal action to oppose the National Guard's occupation in the city.
Rep. Justin J. Pearson was among those who addressed council members. Pearson said poverty was the problem in Memphis, and the city needed opportunity, not occupation.
