FREEPORT, Ill. (WREX) — Residents gathered at the Freeport Public Library to discuss immigration and its impact on local families. The event, hosted by the League of Women Voters, aimed to educate community members on immigration law and their rights.
Sara Dady, an immigration attorney from Rockford, led a presentation titled "A Failing Immigration System." She emphasized the importance of understanding immigration laws in the context of ongoing national debates.
"Everyone has an opinion about immigration, but so few Americans really understand what our laws are," Dady said. "If we're going to have a national debate, which we do need to have on immigration, first we need to understand what our system is and what it is not."
Dady encouraged attendees to become informed and engaged voters
