NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) will install weapons detection systems in all 33 middle schools this school year.

The MNPS Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a pilot program similar to the one that rolled out in the district’s high schools last year.

Installation will start in the middle schools after fall break in mid-October. The district expects to implement the systems in two schools per week.

The Evolv weapons detection systems will cost about $1.2 million and will be paid for through the Tennessee Public School Safety Grant. Operational costs of about $1 million per year in future years will have to come out of the MNPS budget.
