CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians designated hitter David Fry was carted off the field Tuesday after being struck in the face by foul ball while trying to bunt a pitch from Tigers starter Tarik Skubal in the sixth inning.

Fry had squared to bunt with a 2-1 count and two runners on base when Skubal’s 99.1 mph fastball rode up and in, glancing off the bat and striking Fry in area of his nose and mouth.

The 29-year-old Irving, Texas native lay sprawled on his back in the batter’s box as manager Stephen Vogt sprinted from the Cleveland dugout to check on his fallen player.

Fry was taken to Lutheran Medical Center where he was undergoing further medical assessment at the conclusion of Tuesday’s game, the Guardians said.
