BWCAW, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Authorities successfully rescued an Iowa man Tuesday evening in the Boundary Waters.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, around 6:30 p.m., authorities responded to an SOS notification in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) after a camper hurt his leg with an axe.

The camper was able to slow down the bleeding from the injury using a tourniquet and bandages until help arrived.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad, with the help of local businesses and nearby emergency response teams, coordinated the successful rescue.

The camper, Christopher Banfield of the Davenport, Iowa area, was then taken to Cook Hospital.

Authorities remind anyone heading into the Boundary Waters to be ready for emergencies.
