CLEVELAND, Ohio - A man who died in Brunswick police custody had been smashing bottles and making threats before his arrest, authorities said.

At 6 p.m. Friday, police responded to a BP gas station at Pearl and Boston roads after a 911 caller reported a man smashing bottles of wine on the gas station floor after using the restroom.

“We keep telling him to stop,” the caller said, according to 911 audio released by police.

When officers arrived, they found the man, identified as Jacob Derkin, 41, of Wadsworth, who had suffered serious cuts and had been making threats, according to the police report.

Authorities planned to charge him with aggravated menacing and criminal damaging, the police report noted.
