CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry will miss the rest of the season but is expected to fully recover within two months after being struck in the face by a Tarik Skubal fastball while attempting a bunt Tuesday night.

Fry was at the plate in the game-changing sixth inning when he squared for a surprise, mid-count bunt. At first, it appeared the pitch glanced off his bat before hitting him, and it was ruled a foul ball on the field. But Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told the Associated Press the pitch struck Fry directly after he missed the bunt.

Fry fell to the dirt and covered his face with his hands. Blood was visible as he was taken off the field on a cart. The Guardians said he was sent first to a local hospital for evaluation, then transferred to the Clevela
