JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - When you think of school lunch, many of the normal American foods come to mind.

But the Jackson Public School District is looking to shake it up a bit and give students the chance to try new cuisines.

Students at Cascade Elementary in Jackson were served Japanese street food - boba tea and moon burgers - during their school lunch.

“If we were serving pizza and burgers, literally the same old thing, all you’re doing is reinforcing the dominant culture. When you feed something like Japanese and it’s the autumn festival and we’re doing the moon burger, Then it kind of levels the playing field and it kind of opens up the world for the kids,” said chef John Sugimura.

Sugimura knows how important it is for kids to try foods from different cultures.
